Strawberry Basil Bourbon Smash

The bourbon smash has become a fan favorite, traditionally blending rich decadent bourbon with lemon, mint, and simple syrup. For our newest cocktail, the Strawberry Basil Bourbon Smash, we’re giving this classic flavor profile a summery kick with basil and strawberry!
Basil and strawberry are a natural pair: the sweetness of the strawberries brings out basil’s more savory notes of mint, pepper, and anise. Lemon juice and simple syrup provide that trademark tartness, and soda water helps to bring the flavors together for balance in every sip.
Like its cousin, the mint julep, a classic smash is always made with crushed or pebble ice. Rather than using a large cube, which is more common in most bourbon drinks, we use crushed ice in this recipe to keep your drink cooler over time. Like the soda water, it also brings the flavors together as it melts.

INGREDIENTS
3 fresh strawberries
3 fresh basil leaves
¾ oz simple syrup
½ oz lemon juice
Soda water
DIRECTIONS
In a highball glass, muddle the strawberries
Slap the basil leaves between your hands to release the flavor oils and add to glass
Add lemon juice, simple syrup, and bourbon
Fill glass with crushed ice and top with soda water
Stir to combine and serve
